Waitakere Hindi Language and Cultural School

Introduction
The Waitakere Indian Association also runs a Hindi Language and Cultural School from the Corbans Art Centre. Hindi Language and Tabla Classes are held every Sunday of the school term from 10am to 12noon. The Hindi classes began with a dozen students of both pre-school and primary school aged children in September 2001. The roll has continued to grow and currently we have about 70 students and 6 teachers. Entry is open to children 5 years and above.

Structure
Currently the school is totally administered by WIA Executives which authorise and approve guidelines and fundings. The education portfolio holder interacts directly between the executive and the school through the Parents and Teachers association. WIA has desired to see that the PTA takes up more administrative role in the future and is in the process of seeing an independent working body formed by the PTA to take ownership of the day to day running of the school. It is envisaged that The WIA Hindi School operate under the auspices and supervisory jurisdiction of the Waitakere Indian Association

Programme
Currently teachers prepare lessons based on the needs of their students. The major aims of the course are:
1. To emphasise the teaching and preservation of the language and culture of the Hindi speaking people living in West Auckland
2. To incorporate language learning skills necessary for educational purposes as well as for communication with other Hindi-language speakers.

Funding
Funding is currently sourced by way applications to funding providers as well as children’s charity concert to pay for allowances for teachers, classroom hire, materials and resources. The children’s show has become a major source of entertainment for our community. We have come to a stage where the whole show is hosted by our students

Evaluation and Assessment
Continuous on-going evaluations of pupil’s progress in all areas are carried out. These are both:

a) Formative-diagnostic tests to help plan for future work. Through

i) child’s self expression
ii) oral questions and answering
iii) class and group discussions
iv) individual and group projects
