Sonar Dance Academy

Aims and Objects of the Academy
  • To promote and to preserve our Indian Art and Culture.
  • To make a strong foundation through dance form for our community.
  • To teach and learn the computerized way to save time and money while learning Indian dance.

When you dance we have to use six senses at a time ( 5 senses + one) together.
Only then we can control the mind and body easily. Since 2003 Sonar Dance Academy has been contributing in the field of Indian Arts and Culture through the Indian community in New Zealand.

Director and Gold Medalist Choreographer Guru Sonar Chand Singh Ngangom wanted to teach Indian Dance and Martial Arts but especially to small children from 3 years onwards and untrained persons.

His idea is to make a strong foundation through body language according to traditional and modern dance techniques.
He explains that according to his research and the book on World History of Dance, dance forms come from Martial Arts. He believes that when choreographing all dance forms like Classical dance ,Folk Dance, Contemporary Dance, Modern Dance, Bollywood Dance, Dance-Dramas and ballets, must be based on ancient Indian Classical dance techniques.

To learn Classical dance it takes at least 5 years. Guru Sonar Chand has created a scientific system to teach Indian traditional dance techniques for school children and untrained adults who want to learn Indian dancing in a short time.

Achievements of Sonar Chand Dance Academy include:

  • In 2009 students of Sonar Dance Academy participated in 10 performances within 12 months and were appreciated for it.
  • From 22 March 2003 to 27 March 2010, students of the academy performed 81 times till in various events, such as Indian Republic Day Celebration, Holi Festival, Children’s Day, Indian Independence Day, Chinese Moon Festival, Diwali Festival, Thai Festival, Christ Max Festival, Exhibition programmes organized by Corban Estate Arts Centre and Ezekiel 33 Trust.
